How often should I get a dental check up?

As we all know, prevention is better than cure.

For the average adult we recommend a check up and hygiene appointment approximately every six months. Radiographs are usually repeated every two years, as part of the check up, except in certain circumstances, where more frequent xrays are required.

What are the best ways to practice good Oral Hygiene at home?

  • Maintain a Healthy Balanced Diet which limits your intake of sugary and acidic foods and drinks.
  • Brush for two minutes at least twice daily using a pea sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste. For children always use a specific children’s toothpaste which has a lower concentration of fluoride.
  • Interdental cleaning (cleaning between your teeth) is also necessary using either floss or interdental brushes or a combination of both.
  • Mouthwash is not necessary unless specifically recommended by your dentist or hygienist.
  • Whether you use an electric or manual toothbrush is a personal preference – studies have shown that both methods are equally effective.

Why should I have Dental Xrays taken?

  • Dental Radiographs are usually taken routinely, as part of a thorough dental check-up, every two years.
  • Xrays are used to check the areas of the teeth and mouth which cannot be viewed clinically. These include areas between teeth, areas inside the teeth and areas underneath the gums.
  • They are useful in detecting dental decay and periodontal disease (gum disease).
  • They are used to check the size, shape and orientation of Wisdom Teeth.
  • They are used to check for pathology in the jaw bones – cysts and tumours.
  • They are also very useful when treating trauma, to check for any fractures which may have occurred in either teeth, bones or both.
